Stonehenge, Space and the Stars

At our August meeting we were taken on a journey into space and back to eart and Stonehenge by Dr Stuart Eves, who is an Astrophysicist with a particular interest in Archeoastronomy.  Alison, Stuart’s wife operated the excellent visual aids that supported Stuart’s talk.  He began with a basic introduction to the relationship of the earth, sun and the moon, aided by a globe, a hula-hoop and Alison.  The talk was not without humour!

Stuart went on to explain how the technical advances in relatively recent years due to space exploration have enabled more accurate dating of archeological sites and in particular Stonehenge.  This has been achieved by pinpointing the actual position of the sun and moon relative to the earth and it’s rotational axis, going back over thousands of years.  The conclusion in the case of Stonehenge is that it is in fact many thousands of yeas older than it was originally thought.

A fantastic talk that left us all buzzing with questions for Stuart.  A most enjoyable evening.
